Chronic Illness – the impact on movement and health

Working effectively and safely with clients with a chronic illness such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome can be extremely rewarding. This one day course will look in depth at how we can work effectively and sensitively with clients with a chronic illness such as hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).

The morning will provide participants with the latest research about hypermobility and the related conditions and will evaluate the role of Movement Therapy in both the prevention of problems and in the management of the condition. We will introduce the concept and understanding around the most appropriate movement strategy for the client. Participants will gain the knowledge, confidence and awareness for working with this condition.

The course will examine in depth two areas that are often common to those with hypermobility and EDS.

GAIT ISSUES:

Participants will

  • Learn to body read clients from the ground up.
  • Discover how foot position impacts movement or pain in the rest of the body.
  • Design a rehabilitation programme to ‘work’ the connective tissue of the feet.
  • Learn mat-based exercises & guidelines to work with confidence in this field
  • Practise exercises that will load and train the connective tissue of the feet to rebuild the arches leading to healthy gait patterns and reduced pain.

CHRONIC PAIN

Participants will

  • Understand the relationship between chronic illness and pain.
  • Feel confident in working with clients in chronic pain or with a chronic illness.
  • Design a safe and effective programme for a chronic pain client.

The course will include a case study whereby participants can reflect on the content and create an appropriate movement therapy programme and lifestyle guidance for clients presenting with hypermobility and EDS.

Open to all Pilates, movement teachers and therapists as well as healthcare professionals. The course is held at Moss Pilates, the home of Polestar Pilates UK.
